Friendly Lunch ~ by Peter Smith
Twenty one members attended the first 'Friendly Lunch' of the new season at Mangreen Hall
on Saturday 9th October.
As usual the standard of vegan and vegetarian food available was very high. This is even more remarkable as no one knows what the next member is going to bring and the variety of savoury and sweet dishes that appear is incredible.
Friendly Lunch, Sat 9th October
There will be samples of a new cream available for members to test.
The samples are from a pre-production batch made by First Foods of Amersham.
It is dairy, soya, wheat and gluten free, the principle ingredient being oats.

Sheringham Day Out, Sat 11th Sep ~ Peter Smith
Several members met at the Priory Maze Gardens for a picnic and a get
together for a mardle. (that's Norfolk for a gossip) The weather was just
right and the picnic took place in a secluded corner of the gardens.
Picnic over, this year we decided to go our own ways instead of keeping
together. Some visited the gardens, others went to the maze, and the rest of
us went to the Beeston Bump and climbed to the top. ( The Beeston Bump is a
small mountain in Beeston next to Sheringham.) The views along the north
Norfolk coast from the top are wonderful.

Everybody met up again at John and Jane's lovely bungalow and garden for afternoon tea and cakes. This is the last of our summer outings and we look forward to meeting everybody at our friendly lunch at Mangreen in October.

Norfolk Broads Excursion ~ Sat 10th July
Nineteen members met up at Potter Heigham for a day of cruising on The Broads.
The weather hadn't been very nice over the previous few days but our luck was
in and we enjoyed a day with broken cloud and bursts of sunshine.
The two electric boats had more than enough room to seat everybody with space to move about and enjoy the views. We stopped at the Ferry Inn near Horning for lunch and then made our way back via Ranworth broad and the Wildlife Centre. In places the waterway was busy with a mixture of sailing and powered craft and we were, unwittingly, the cause of several incidents and near misses. The black clouds finally caught up with us on the return trip to the boat yard. We were able to roll back the awning and shelter from the showers while the sailing boats were left suddenly becalmed.
Here are a selection of nautical pictures. If you've got any more email them to me and I'll add them to the page. [Max]

Radio Norfolk Interview ~ Fri 27 May
I listened in to the second part of the interview about butcher's wife Sonia and her challenge
to stop eating meat for five days. Read the full transcript yourself and make of it what you will.
It's a shame that in two long interviews the main issues discussed were those of taste,
and convenience. Nothing at all about the reasons for or against eating animals was mentioned,
other than taste (the butcher's wife) or livelihood (the butcher) or allergies (dairy intolerance).

EDP Provoke controversy 27 May
As part of National Vegetarian Week the Eastern Daily Press included a two page feature
on Vegetarianism in yesterday's issue. Members have written in outrage at what followed.
An article by Vincent Culot put forward his views on the French attitude to eating animals.
The main thrust of his argument is that Vegetarians are missing out on the amazing tastes
available to meat eaters and so the quality of their lives is diminished.
Animals may taste nice but this is irrelevant from the perspective of
ethical vegetarianism. The well know philosophy behind vegetarianism
has nothing to do with what meat tastes like but the way we choose to treat
other animals. In fact, in this article there is no attempt to rebut the moral argument
put forward by vegetarians. Furthermore, Culot's views that a meal can not be enjoyed without meat,
and that vegetarians are unhealthy, are both risible and not based in reality.
I'm not an Animal - BBC2, Monday 10pm (10 May -14 June)
Has anyone seen this? It's an animated comedy series featuring talking animals that
have been liberated from a vivisection lab. I saw the third episode last night
(24 May) having seen the first episode two weeks ago. If there is supposed to be
a deep meaningful message buried within the script then I'm just another stupid animal
not intelligent enough to see it. As far as I can see this is a
trawl through all those clichéd human characteristics that (supposedly) set us apart
from other animals i.e. an obsession with self status, money, sex and materialism.
For their next series I suggest they do something even funnier, such as
life in an Iraqi prison where inmates are experimented on to turn them into
good citizens. Or would this not be funny enough?
[Max 25 May]
Last week'e episode (June 7th) was about the Sparrow having a hit record. The pop industry is a less bleak subject and I found this episode hilarious. I love the style of animation which makes it even funnier, although other people have said they just find it odd. One more episode to go, I do believe.

Book Signing! on Sat 29th May, 12-2pm
Tricia is keeping busy this week. As well as her radio appearances she will be at
The City Farm Stores (30 Magdalen Rd, Norwich) to sign copies of her recipe book
Glad to be Vegan.
Radio Norfolk Interview ~ Mon 24 May
I managed to pick up Radio Norfolk just over the border here in Ely and have
made a transcript of Graham Barnard interviewing Sonia and Tricia.
My advice to Sonia would be to go into the Forum library because they have dozens of good vegetarian cookery books. Also, have a look round the health food stores such as Rainbow and Holland and Barrett, and also in the supermarket she shops at. Most big supermarkets have a large range of vegetarian ready meals. Good luck, and let's see at the end of the week how things have gone.
When in Rainbow last week they told me they were moving premises in July.
National Vegetarian Week Mon 24 - Sun 30 May 2004
Several members have organised displays at local libraries for the week.
Radio Norfolk is running a feature whereby a butcher goes Veggie for the week. There will be an interview on the Monday morning breakfast show (6-8am) currently scheduled for 7:40am. Tricia Frances will be there to give the butcher some advice. There should also be a follow-up program on Friday. (I assume it means they adopt a vegetarian diet for the week, not the vegetarian philosophy of treating other animals with compassion.) So make sure you tune in to Radio Norfolk at breakfast time on Monday morning.
More details about National Vegetarian Week are available from the
Vegetarian Society web site.

Some forthcoming events, not so close to home...
Veggie Pride ~ 15 May, Paris
"Festival of Vegetarian & Vegan Pride" - An annual event to show our pride
for our chosen way of life. The web site is worth a look even if you can't make it to Paris.
36th World Vegetarian Congress ~ 8-14 Nov, Brazil
I picked up the April edition of Eco Echo, Norfolk's alternative news review
and Green guide at the Green Parrot health food store in Swaffham. This is a
free magazine that appears to be published monthly. It includes articles on
The Organic Way by David Barker of Wolterton Hall, and Spilling the Beans
by Kalba Meadows of the vegetarian cafe at Cley. There is also a What's On guide
plus information and adverts for various things alternative (Yoga, Steiner Education, Fairtrade, etc.)
Shops
From the above magazine I see that Rainbow in Norwich are moving to new premises (In July).
The new shop is just a minutes walk from the old one and is opposite the Guildhall.
In North Norfolk the Cromer Kitchen has now closed. Let me know if any of
your local health food shops or restaurants close, move or change name so that I can
keep the listings up to date.
Food and Cooking!
Tricia Frances is carrying out some research into food allergies and is looking for
volunteers to take part in the research. Vegans with or without allergies are required.
You will need to try out various recipes and provide some written feedback.
Testing (or should that be tasting?) is due to start in May.
For further details contact Tricia via her web site,
Red Road.
[16-April-2004 Max]
The Forums were hosted on an external site that has now shut down.
They weren't used very much so I am wondering if it is worth putting in a new Forum.
let me know what you think.
Max, 12 March
At this month's Friendly Lunch we have Tricia Frances as the guest speaker. Tricia has previously published a vegan cookbook and is currently working on a new book for vegans with food allergies or intolerances.
You can find further details about Tricia's current book Glad To Be Vegan at the Red Road web site.
